Inside Line Promotions – ORRVILLE, Ohio (May 9, 2023) – Joey Amantea captured a top-five result during his Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series season debut last Friday at Hilltop Speedway.
Amantea was also in contention for a top five the following night at Wayne County Speedway before a late-race incident ended with a 13th-place finish.
“We more than accomplished everything we wanted,” he said. “Both nights we had winning speed. The first night at Hilltop it was more of getting reacquainted with the 410 and it’d been about three weeks since we raced overall so we were a little rusty.”
Amantea qualified third quickest in his group at Hilltop Speedway in Millersburg, Ohio. He then finished second in a heat race to advance into the feature redraw, in which he pulled the No. 2 to line up on the outside of the front row in the A Main.
“In the heat race we battled for the win and did what we needed to make the feature redraw,” he said. “In the feature we tracked down the leader in traffic and I was passing when the caution came out. Then it turned into five-lap bursts. I messed up a little with my line and not keeping my tire hot under caution. I ended up finishing fifth, losing fourth at the finish line by a couple thousandths.”
The weekend concluded on Saturday at Wayne County Speedway, where Amantea timed in fourth quickest in his group. A runner-up result in a heat race earned a spot into the feature redraw for the second straight night.
“What a cool place that was,” he said. “We were really fast. I believe we go back there at some point and I’m very excited.
“We made the feature redraw again and this time started fifth. On Lap 1 a car spun in front of me and I tagged him. I restarted 22nd and drove up to the top five in 16 or 17 laps. With about four laps to go on a restart for a red flag going into the bottom of turn one a guy half spun in front of me. I tagged him and spun both of us out. Regardless of it's your fault or not if you stop on the track twice they remove you from the track so that ended our night early.”
Amantea returns to his home state of Pennsylvania this weekend to race a micro sprint on Friday at Linda’s Speedway in Jonestown before tackling a Rapid Tire USAC East Coast Sprint Cars show on Saturday at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville.
